Email Marketing- How Often Is Too Much

Posted on 26 February 2010

So Here is the scenario, I am hanging out in the Warrior Forum the other night and a great post comes up.
The post was simply “Gurus” who email too frequently. And it really got me to thinking. How often is too often.

So what I did was break down the emails I get into a few different categories. I am no expert at email marketing, but with a couple years under my belt in this industry I can share with you what I see in my inbox and what I actually dig when it comes to emails.

There are only about five categories in my mind when it comes to most email marketers and here they are.

1. The over-mailer. This is the guy that emails two if not three times a day promoting his content, his products and different offers. Regardless of whether or not the content has value, which it usually does. Me, myself and I don’t like to have our inbox full of stuff on a regular day.

The majority of the emails will typically get deleted and I guess I am just missing out on all the value or I will just read it the next day when I get three more emails.

2. The once a week mailer. These emails either or impress me with the headline, or not. They fall into the category that I will typically read if I have time, but if I don’t will go into a folder for later.

They are typically really solid with the information that is in them, and the writer has usually sit on the email and really worked it so that it bring a good message and solid buying offer.

3. The once a dayer. This is typically one of my favorites. The information is consistently bringing a good message and a solid product offer that is intertwined into the message. They give the “what to do”, which is always insightful, but offer the “how to” in the product they have for sale.

This is typical of a lot of copywriters who use email to tighten their already killer sales copy skills.

4. The four-month promo type. This is the guy that you usually hear from every couple months who send out the same email promoting a different product. “sorry, INSERT NAME, I know it has been a couple months since we talked, but my friend is releasing a killer new product and I figured that since I have not been around awhile, I would let you in on it first. “

This is the type that drives me the most crazy…I will usually read the email, and if the product sounds decent, I won’t ever click their link, I will just go find the product online and purchase.

This is about the most UN-attractive way to build rapport and a relationship with your list.

5. The Always Promoting Type- This is the guy/gal that is constantly promoting every single click bank product that they possibly can. Their emails typically get deleted every time. I often wonder why I keep this person on my inbox list. I guess it is that at one point they actually offered me something that I wanted and then they now are attempting to extort my email address for every penny possible.

So there you have it. There may be more than five different types of email marketers but that is what I really see going on.

I don’t know which you prefer, or which you are attempting to be. But really all of these strategies seem to be working for some of the most successful marketers in our industry.

So really, I am no one to tell any one “How often is too often” but here is my suggestion. Pick style and stick with it. Consistency will always win over absolute randomness.

    Jeff,

Excellent five different types of email marketers,I tend to avoid the click bank junkies.lol

I basically email when I have something positive to share, doesn’t happen everyday but about 3 times per week…

    Keep on rocking…….

  2. You are right! Consistency is the key, trying to use so many marketing strategies will affect your results. I think mastering two or three at the most should give you good results without overwhelming yourself.

    Great post Jeff :)

    Great Break Down Jeff….
I’m with you on the 4 months mailer lol

  4. Thanks Jeff for writing this post. I too have a love/hate relationship with emails. I want their info, some of it is good, but I hate getting those emails everyday!!! So, I have started thinning those out, I have looked them over and have unsubscribed to many. I like not getting all of those emails. Now I can start over anew… with new pests :)

    Jeff,

Thanks for the post. I find that I will read e-mails from proven leaders no matter what style of e-mailer they are. Also I read all e-mails from people I have developed a relationship with, such as yourself. The multiple a day e-mailer does drive me a little crazy.

I was wondering about this Jeff.

I tend to like the “once or twice a week” email marketer who takes their time and presents a lot of value. The everyday email marketer is a little too much for me.

Your post makes a lot of practical sense,

    Thanks,
    ~Bert

    Hey Jeff,

Great post on how many emailers think about how they handle their marketing. I sure many of us have been in several of those categories at one time or another. But then we grow up and understand, as you say, you have to be consistent.

I am progressing into the inverse of these people. I try to qualify the recipient to determine how often a person would like to be contacted and what their interest level is in what I am doing and then I adjust my campaign accordingly.

Great post and a great reason to keep stopping back.

    To Your Continued Success,
    Bill

This is a good summary and to tell you the truth in some ways I have fallen into each category at one time or another. I do agree that the best is daily and this takes time and effort but delivers the best results.

    Good Post.

    Jeff,

This is an Excellent post! I agree with all 5 types of email marketers.

I try to think that I’m a daily mailer however I’m not as consistent as I should be. I’d say that I mail atleast 4 out of the 7 days.

It’s always about giving value though. That is the key to being successful at email marketing.
